Fan frustration

by Ozzi on September 20, 2008

A caller phoned SEN last night worried about the possibility of a Geelong loss. Despite having a tremendous season, a loss to the Bulldogs would have seen them exist the finals series and finish 2008 disappointingly.

I think the caller was a bit of a worry wart. To be concerned about a loss before the game started is a waste of energy and lacked a bit of faith. Also, the current system does provide the ladder leader a few benefits during the finals;

  • A longer break before the first final match
  • A double chance if they lose the first match
  • A week’s rest if they win the first match

So there’s no too much to complain about if you ask me.

In a “Grand Final” type format there will always be a sudden death match and the possibility for an outstanding team to lose to a team that hasn’t performed as well during the season.

Is there a solution?

I think the only solution is to forget the final series and award the trophy to the best team after the home and away season. This limits the chance of a lucky win and rewards the best team over a longer period of time.

I don’t think this would ever happen but it certainly would be the fairest way. Who knows, the AFL might even fix the huge discrepancy in the current draw (schedule) that exists and get each team to play each other twice.

Wouldn’t that be good?

Don’t get ahead of yourself

by Ozzi on September 15, 2008

Seems that most of the media don’t give the Bulldogs or St.Kilda much hope this weekend.

Sure, Geelong and Hawthorn have been in terrific form but I don’t think it’s wise to assume that they’ll have a stroll in the park. Sport has a funny way of being an equaliser, just ask the Melbourne Storm.

My thinking is Geelong is due for a slip up (no reason - it’s been a while since they’ve been challenged and they’ve got to lose eventually. Don’t they?) and Hawthorn have proven to be beatable a number of times already this year.

It’s Ok to pick a winner but I wouldn’t write off any professional sporting team in a final match before the start of the game. Strange things do happen sometimes.
